Our founder, Dra. Monica Delgado, completed a Ph.D. in multicultural psychology and studies in neuropsychology – and for twenty years, worked as a leading forensic psychologist. Every day, she worked with people facing emotionally devastating circumstances, seeking to heal them, inside and out. It was here that Monica first conceived of Dra. Sunshine, which began as a healing gift of tea:
“It began with offering my clients homemade botanical teas to ease them into the process of sharing their struggles. Then came a balm.... Thinking about my clients’ struggles as I worked on recipes forced me to consider how the entire body played a role in mental health. As I watched face after face light up, I began to see how being kind toward your skin can translate to a powerful emotional release. And I wanted people everywhere to get to feel this good.”

We pride ourselves on being science nerds. To dream up skincare solutions for body and mind, we draw from our unique access to the most sophisticated research on organic compounds including cannabinoids. But, our story starts with Monica Delgado.
Monica grew up in LA in a celebrated family of handcrafted guitar makers, who made custom guitars for luminaries like Arlo Guthrie and Los Lobos. She learned early that to achieve perfection, “every millimeter makes a difference.” And, she connected as well to the grounding wisdom of her grandmother, Shorty. Shorty rode bareback into her 70s. She worked the land, looked cool, and still had fun dancing. Shorty taught Monica how to transform whole plants like yerba buena and aloe vera into soothing, restorative ointments and salves. She instilled in Monica a lifelong passion for learning about healing botanicals. It was because of her multi-generational wisdom that Monica was able to offer that first tea. Today, we honor Shorty’s vibrant spirit and the Delgado tradition of artisinal production with every time-tested, organic ingredient we source and every product we make.
